Becoming a Mentor
Why should you say yes to becoming someone’s mentor?
- Mentoring is an excellent opportunity to positively impact someone else’s life professionally, academically, or even personally.
- It can also help you become more of an asset at your place of employment. High turn over in any industry is bad for the health of that industry financially and even in terms of morale. When employees connect with someone as a mentor or confidante, they tend to develop loyalty for the company and feel vested. They also feel as if the company is investing in them. That makes for more pleasant work environment.
- Being a mentor allows you to leave a legacy for your company, industry and protégée. You never know when you are mentoring the next Bill Gates, Sonia Sotomayor or Barack Obama.
If you don’t have a mentee or your company has nothing formal, take someone with high potential under your wing. It doesn’t have to be a formal mentor/mentee relationship with biweekly meetings. It really can be informal advice and role modeling.
But if the opportunity arises and someone asks you to be his or her mentor, say YES! #PowerMoveMonday #SolutionsNotResolutions You got this!
