Happy Power Move Monday. Today let’s talk about some interview basics. I mean the very basics.
Now that’s it’s getting cold here in the Northeast, I am noticing that interviewees are they their coats, hats, gloves and scarves on during the interview. You know it took you all day yesterday to decide on an outfit. Let’s see it.
Basics #1: Take Off Your Coat.
Relax. Take a moment. Get comfortable. If the search committee doesn’t have the hospitality to say, “Can I take your coat?” then you in turn should ask, “May I put my coat somewhere?”
Basics #2: No Mumbling.
Mumbling is is the worst. Do not talk to the table. Do not talk to the papers. Talk to your audience. Talk to the search committee. Make eye contact. NO MUMBLING. Articulate. Project your voice. Speak clearly. And please no slang. No colloquialisms. Speak properly.
Sometimes your authentic self can keep you from getting the job. So you have some decisions to make. But I am here to tell you that slang is probably not a good idea…UNLESS…that is the culture of the company and/or the industry. Read the room. How is everyone else communicating?
Basics # 3. Do Your Research.
there is one interview questions that You can almost guarantee you are going to get and you have no excuse not to answer it. The question is usually
Why do you want to work here?
What do you know about the company?
They are essentially the same questions in my opinion. But given that we have this thing called the internet, there is not excuse not to be ready for an answer for that question. You need to understand the mission, vision and/or philosophy for that company. Understand how you fit into that company. And if there are any gaps in that company, how can you fill those gaps? You should be reading the strategic plan if you are lucky enough to find it on their website. If it’s not there, that’s ok. Reading through the website’s pages should give you a sense of the company’s strategies are and where they want to go in the future.
It is unacceptable to answer that question with “I don’t know much about your company!” Had you spent even 10 minutes on the company website, you would know a lot. So make sure you PREPARE!
In Case You Missed It:
- Take off your coat.
- No Mumbling and proper use of language
- Have an answer prepared for the question “What do you know about the company?” and “Why do you want to work there?”
Good luck. #powermovemonday #solutionsnotresolutions
I know you got this!
