Get a Hobby
As a Gallup Strengths Coach and through my public speaking, I keep hearing the same thing from high achievers. To quote Rihanna, all they do is werk, werk, werk. When they leave their 10 to 12 hour days working for someone else, they work some more during their 2nd shift by taking care of their children and household. Afterward, if they are lucky they get to go to bed or chat on the phone with a friend. But most high achievers have a 3rd shift…they either “go back to work” on their day job OR they work on their side hustle like I do once my son goes to bed.
Role Model Healthy Behavior
Of course you’re gray haired and worn out. Of course you feel exhausted the next day. And of course you’re not eating right or getting enough exercise.
So for today’s power move, I recommend you do something for yourself. A lot of these power moves focus on what we can do for our job and career. But what good is that if you aren’t in a good place as an individual. What good are you if you don’t take care of YOUR needs?
Today, I say, get a hobby. Seems glib and dismissive…but no. The great thing about hobbies is that they tap into our creative energies. They give us a break and let us escape. For some it’s creative activities like painting, knitting, bird watching, arts and crafts. For others it’s physical or high energy activities like surfing, hiking, paintball, hunting, or rock climbing. For me it’s photography. It may seem that I love only being in front of the camera. But the reality is that I enjoy being behind the camera even more.
Unleash Your Creativity
Photography is about composition, lighting and finding the beauty in everything. I can take those skills and concepts into what I do daily with my work or with my family. When you’re having a bad day or those pesky kids won’t listen, finding the beauty in the ugly can be powerful. It’s what I have been saying all these months…beauty or strengths over the ugly and the deficits opens up a much different, much better perspective on approaching life and work. So get a hobby. Do something creative…do something for yourself.
