Everyone has something at work that doesn’t work well or that everyone complains about. So why don’t you take some initiative and put together an ad hoc committee, run it and come up with some recommendations or a proposal to make it better or to change it?
You can also go at it alone and do some research. Put together some best practices that you can share with your boss.
Caution: Make sure that whatever is not working, isn’t someone’s pet project from 20 years ago because you don’t want to step on any political toes.
Other types of stretch assignments include volunteering to be on a committee, especially one that no one else wants to touch. Consider it a challenge. Imagine how far it will take you to take on a project that is seen as a difficult and challenging by the entire office? When you successfully accomplish the goal, you will get noticed for the right reasons. You will stand out above the crowd.
Also if you are asked to do something above your skill set, think long and hard before you decline. You can learn some very valuable skills and potentially be in the presence of big players who can eventually become mentors to you. You would not have been asked, if your supervisor or your supervisor’s supervisor didn’t think you were capable.
