How to Be Direct
Being direct is an important but tricky skill in the workplace. The wrong tone can be a disaster and can make you look like a jerk. It’s like criticizing a waiter before he/she brings out your food. Not a good idea.
There are 4 things to consider when attempting to be direct.
- Watch your tone. Always watch your tone. People can be very sensitive to how you say something and the body language that goes with it.
- Once you watch your tone, you will likely also be polite.
- Be Honest. Lay out the situation. Remind whomever you are talking to about the deadline and about the responsibilities
There is a difference between…
approaching someone by saying “What’s going on with our project. We are going to miss the deadline. You haven’t done anything that you are supposed to be doing. I’m not happy about this”!
“Listen, I haven’t seen much movement on the project that’s due in a couple of weeks. Let’s sit down and talk about some strategies where we can get it done together.”
See the difference?
Finally, when being direct, wear a smile and make sure the smile is sincere and not sinister. Remember you can catch more flies with honey rather than vinegar.
