Soliciting Feedback from Your Supervisor
Are you getting the feedback you need from your supervisors? It is critical that you do. It’s a power move to go to your boss and ask him/her about what you’re not doing right and how to do it better. You will have to swallow your pride a bit but this is going to help you, especially if you want a future at your current company or university.
Once you get the advice, don’t just sit on it. Follow through and do something about it. Make the changes that your supervisor has recommended.
Did you know that women of color do not get the high level development and feedback they need from their bosses because upper management is often fearful of being accused of racism or sexism. It’s unfair yes. But we need to also make ourselves open to the feedback. Let your supervisor know that you want constructive feedback with solutions to move you forward.
This is hard, I know. We are sometimes worried that our conversations with our supervisors are not a safe space. You will have to use your emotional intelligence to gauge that. But keep an open mind and start small if you can’t dive into the deep end. So muster up the courage, stay open minded and request constructive feedback from your boss.
