ISSUES FACING LATINAS IN THE ACADEMY
If you are anything like me, you long to be motivated and inspired. And that’s exactly what happened during the Breakfast of Champions where Assistant VP of Student Affairs/Dean of Students at Hofstra University, Sofia B. Pertuz shared some of her research findings regarding the issues facing Latinas in the academy.
She shared her top five findings after interviewing 26 mid-level Latina professionals in Student Affairs as potential obstacles to professional advancement within higher education:
- Uncertainty of the unknown (adobe ceiling)
- lack of mentorship
- institutional fit
- navigating politics
- lack of sponsored professional development
Her important work and dedication to Latinas in higher education also made it easy to name her the first Campeona for Higher Education. After her presentation she was honored by the organization. Between her creation and curation of Latinas Completing Doctoral Degrees Facebook Page and blog and her important research, we are honored to have her as a supporter.
Dean Pertuz was kind enough to give Latinas in Higher Education permission to record her presentation. To learn more about her findings, watch the recording of Dean Pertuz’s presentation: Issues Facing Latinas in the Academy. To see photos of the event, click here.
