Be Solution Oriented
What keeps your supervisor up at night? What keeps your supervisor’s supervisor up at night? Really start to think in those terms in order to be a problem solver of the first order. If you know the answer to these questions and you can bring appropriate, first order solutions to the table, you become an invaluable asset.
Ok so how can you figure out what keeps these folks up at night?
1.Just ask. This may depend on your relationship but you may get an opportunity for conversation at some meeting or occasion.
2. Listen and observe. Pay attention to the news and happenings at work. While the grapevine isn’t the best source of information, it’s still worth listening to what the rumors are. Especially if those on top aren’t aware of what the grapevine is saying. You don’t want the emperor running around with no clothes and if you can be a confidant, you position yourself as someone who can be of help.
3. Be predictive. What issues are coming down the pike in your industry? What are the papers saying? Get ahead of things and help foresee the speed bumps or better yet provide solutions to avoid them all together.
That’s it. Short and sweet and to the point. I don’t know about you, but I’m not a turn my computer off at 459pm type. Being creative at work can really put you in a good position and allow you to actually enjoy the work you do. Afterall, we are at work at least 1/3 of the day. So why not make it meaningful?
