Invest in Yourself
Don’t hold your breath for someone to come by and discover you. It just doesn’t work that way. Most of the time, you have to take control of your own destiny because opportunities don’t normally knock. What opportunities are you creating for yourself? Not sure how to start? Here are a few tips to get you started.
- If you see an opportunity, go for it, apply for it, ask for it. Sure there’s always a chance that your supervisor will tap you for something greater, but more often than not you’ll have some competition. In higher ed in particular, you could be the favorite internal candidate, but most colleges and universities will still post the job vacancy. Don’t get too comfortable. There will be higher expectations for your performance in an interview.
- If you want training in a particular skill and your supervisor is denying you professional development dollars, skip the pretty shoes or the night at the bar and INVEST IN YOURSELF. Pay for it out of pocket. If you work for a city or government agency, training can be relatively inexpensive and sometimes free. Trainings are also discounted for non-profits and government agencies and that includes most colleges and universities.
- If you can’t afford to attend a national conference consider attending your regional conference. It may be in your hometown or max 2 hours away. Instead of asking for the entire cost, that is sure to be rejected, ask for your job to pay for half or the flight or the hotel and then invest in yourself and pay for the rest on your own.
- Do you own a business? What are you doing to make that business great? Hire someone to make you a professional website, business card and marketing materials, especially if you don’t have the skills or talent to do it yourself.
Stop complaining about what someone isn’t giving you and get it yourself. Take control of your future and stop leaving it in someone else’s hands. That’s it. It’s that simple.
